A tale of two bedrooms

A little kingdom I possess, where thoughts and feelings dwell; And very hard the task I find of governing it well.
Louisa May Alcott

I wish I had more home pictures to share, but we are living in half a house- the rest of our home is in a barn West Virgina, being stored after we sold our home there in January.

Here is the home we sold.

A lovely Victorian, but, we no longer had the time to invest in restoring it after the big twins arrived. BTW, the day we closed on the home- January 3rd, I told my husband at the attorneys office that I believed I was pregnant with twins again. He laughed and said not to be silly! I wasn't showing any signs, we weren't trying for a baby, wasn't "late", just picked up an article on Joan Lunden and it was about her having two sets of twins and I had a sense of euphoria and knew I was going to have twins again, too! It was fun to own this home- it was our playhouse and we stayed there over the Holidays and when we visited my family. Homes like this in WV are cheap, cheap, cheap.

But back to my home in Ga...

So, with half my things in a barn in WV, I haven't hung all our pictures, haven't placed all our furniture etc. The living room and dining room are basically complete, but none of the bedrooms or family room are finished. I do, however, have all my bedding with me.

If theres one thing I collect, it would be duvets, quilts, sheets and comforters. I love changing my bedding with the seasons, and love the look of bright colors in the spring, and warm neutrals in the autumn. I thought I would share our beds two looks.

This is actually the autumn look for our room, but, its a newer set and my husband loves it, so we have it on the bed for now. In the autumn I will add a few burgundy velvet pillows for Christmas and winter.

This is my spring and summer set, and I had to remake the bed to showcase it! I change out the yardlong over the bed, change the pillows out, and usually the lamos but one of the other lamps broke in the move so I am in the market for two more. These amber lamps were bought at a yard sale for five bucks each.

I think these two distinct looks also show how "Type a" my personality is. I loved the Victorian in WV because having that home there and the one here gave me seven bedrooms to decorate. Sometimes I daydream of owning a B&B just to decorate the bedrooms! My living room and dining room stay the same. I seldom make changes in the kitchen, but bedrooms in thise home are an evolving canvas!

Hi Lizzie- I love all your photos! And that photo of your previous home is fantastic! You just don't get many houses like that here in the U.K. I really liked the photos of your bedroom too! Hope you are having a good week and are not too rushed off your feet!!!xx

Hi - 7 bedrooms! I love your old house. We moved here from NJ and there are so many of those types of homes there. It's one of my favorite styles. Your two looks for your bedroom are lovely - did you make that really pretty pillow in the center with the embelishments on it? Either way, both looks are great!

Oh- the victorian had 4 bedrooms, and our former home here had 3- 7 combined... but, the victorian house did have three fireplaces. It originally had four and a previous owner removed one (why???). Sometime I will post the pictures of that- it had empire mantels. Gorgeous!

However, I really don't miss the house. Its nice to be WARM in the winter- that house kept us freezing, and my husband is an engineer who specializes in heating and cooling!

Oh how could you give up that house? I am the same way, I love quilts, duvets and comforter! I always laugh and think if there were some type of natural disaster in our area and our house survives I would probably have a quilt or comforter for every neighbor! Half of our stuff is in storage in Oregon and I miss it so much. We left it there because we thought we would be moving back in a few years and now we have decide to move down South! So I have to find a relatively inexpensive way to ship it to the East Coast. I still cannot believe you are having another set of twins. I kneel at your feet with respect!
Your bedroom is lovely!

Both of the bedrooms are beautiful, but I especially like the "summery" one ~ the pink roses and such!
Pretty!

Hi Lizzie,
I really enjoyed reading this post! WOW what a gorgeous home you sold!!! That is amazing you are having your second set of twins!!!! You sound really calm about it all which is great!

Your bedding on the Spring bed, is that a Rachel Ashwell one? I believe I have the same design on our kitchen tablecloth and napkins, it is so pretty!

By the way you spurred me into action to put a few new papers etc on my website and I made up some ballerina cards today too so if you wanted to check them out they are now on my website, you can find the link on my blog page.

Thanks for the great post!

Wow I never thought about changing my bedding for the seasons. I'm not sure if I could pull that off in my bedroom though because of the blue walls it would always look summery.

The publisher of the book I had on my blog "Cottage Style" is Publications International.

That looks like a very cosy bed with both sets on! I'm sorry my last post had such an effect on you. I too haven't been back since we sold the house, I don't think I could, we should both treasure our memories.

Lots of Love

Lizzie, I change our quilt seasonally, but you really go all out: changing artwork, pillows, etc. I will have to consider that when we next redecorate our bedroom. I think I would enjoy the change. Thanks for the inspiration! Your room is beautiful in both of its incarnations!

I love 'both' beds~don't think I could pick a favorite. I love the charm of the WV home. My father was born in WV. I went there with my sisters for a vacation a couple of years ago, and for family research. Very pretty homes there.

I love the spring and summer set. Remember old iron beds? I can see that bedding on one of those frames. I wish I had one. Both grandmothers had them in their homes and I'm not sure where they ended up.

Had you made any plans or decorated the turret in the West Virginia house?

Lizzie, the home you had in WV was just lovely! I know what you mean about home prices. In one town near me in PA, a victorian may go for $70,000, but in another local town a victorian may go for over $300,000...it's amazing the price difference.

I loved the pictures of your bedroom. The pale green quilt reminds of the Shabby Chic quilt I bought for my dd at Target.

What a gorgeous victorian house!
And your bedroom photos...beautiful!

While the victorian would have been a fun home to decorate, I completely understand about the heating and cooling factor.

My Gram lived in a big old house that was ALWAYS freezing. Going downstairs to bathroom in the middle of night...Brrrrr
