Thats the only picture I have on the computer of my celluloid santa collection on the Lincoln's Buffet. That primitive piece now belongs to my mother as we didn't have a niche for it here that displayed it well. This home is so bright and traditional that it looked chunky- where as before I always managed to find one little spot where I could have a country type vignette. At Christmas I love folksy things!
This past weekend we put up the outside lights and the big tree indoors. As well as lined up my entire collection of Santas on the mantle. I will have to take a picture of my tree to share, I am proud of it! But, I don't know if I will show you the lights or not...
I believe that Christmas decorating outdoors is primarily for Children- and the bits of the child that survived to adulthood in each of us. And I so remember sitting in the backseat of my parents car and driving around to look at lights each Christmas. Even the car itself was Christmasy- an old Pontiac with plush burgundy velvet seats! The outside was speckled with rust and my mom called her car "Freckles". She wouldn't trade it in because it was such a cozy ride! Each year we would venture out to popular neighborhoods in search of the BEST lights. My dad would carry a pen sized flashlight and put it on his nose and say he looked like Rudolph driving a Pontiac. My dad was such a dork. Remember the word "Dork"?
The BEST lights were the TACKY ones. Neon Orange thrown onto a tree, green on a shrub, multi colored blinking lights on a porch railing. The tackier the light display, the more "ooohs" and "aaahs" it garnered from my sister and I. We would ask my mom and dad to please oh please make several passes by those homes. And those classy all white numbers that shimmered in the "best" neighborhoods and cul de sacs? YUCK. Booooring.
We would end up driving through the neighborhoods populated by senior citizens (and their glorious older decorations), save one lone ritzy neighborhood where every year the home owner paid someone to decorate a 40 foot pine in the yard with multi colored strands.
So, I am the owner of a Tacky Christmas House. Our tall shrubs (like mini-trees) are strung with solid green and overtop that solid gold. The midsize shrubs have blue lights, and the ground covering has white lights. I am excited about a tree on the porch that I am putting multi colored blinkers on.
By the time I am through I am probably going to make neighbors wince at the spectacle we are creating. But, I also hope to make children in the backseats of their parents cars say "ah".
Babies update:
Ewan and Rowan have officially gave up their midnight bottle. They take their bottles at 8-9 p.m., then sleep until 3 a.m. YIPPEE! This is really giving my husband extra rest since before he would sit up to midnight with colicy ole Ewan (who is less colicy, too!) because the only way I would get any daily rest was to sleep from 8-midnight in ear plugs. I still go to bed about 9- but he can go to sleep earlier now too since the ear plugs aren't necessary to get decent slumber now.
I am getting a larger chunk of sleep in one resting, but less sleep overall since giving up the midnight bottle has made them very fussy and agitated from about 5-6 to 7. I LIKE sleeping until 7. *sighs*. I like the little bit of chill in the air, and snuggling back down into the blankets as Duane leaves for work and knowing I can sprawl out for an hour. Hmpfh. But, on the whole I am much more rested now- it might not be the sleep I like, but its good sleep. An added bonus is on weekend morning we take turns letting the other one sleep until about 8.
Rowan has become the projectile refluxer. He is like a little pukey timebomb. He gets this look in his eye then spews 6 ounces. ACK! I have started feeding him a little less at once and then returning to his bottle after Ewans and that seems to be helping.
They both smile all the time and Ewan tries to hard to talk that he gets exasperated with us, and then lets out a big heap of a "hmpfh" at us and sighs.
As far as Lucas and Matilda- we have given up documenting her vocabulary. She is off the charts developmentally there. She learns a new word or two daily. She knows what animals say, she expresses empathy, she tells you what episode of Mickey is her favorite- "Doctor Daisy", etc, etc, etc. Lucas... I just don't know. I ask him to say something and she over talks him. Today he ran past us as I was playing with a See and Say with Tilly and as I said "What does a cow say?" He yells out "Mooooooooo" as he dashes by. I hadn't heard him say that before and excitedly tried to get him to repeat it. I then asked him to tell me again and he growled at me. However he understands language. loves to play with his sister and his parents, so I need to stop comparing him to Tilly and just let him be Lucas.

What a fun post! I like "folksy" things at Christmas too, and am thankful that decor goes well in our family room, as I put more pastel shabby decor in the other rooms! I loved your discussion of lights. Ours are TACKY -- well, not to us, but I'm sure to others. We like the BIG C9 and C7 bulbs that remind us of our childhood. And light-up Santas and Snowmen. This year we will have one of those light-up Santa/Sleigh/Reindeer combos! :)
I think Lucas is just more quiet because Tilly is verbal. I've never had twins, but I see that in families where the children are close in age -- one is more verbal, so the other just lets that one do the talking. I don't think it's a developmental thing, just personality! I loved in the video how Lucas just kept circling you two, doing his own thing!
:)
Hi Lizzie... I love your santa collection, and I love your name... my sister's name is also Lizzie... :)
Thanks for stopping by "my house in the roses". I hope you can come back soon.

Love your santa collection! My husband LOVES decorating the outside of the house. I actually had extra exterior outlets installed last year for all his lights. I do think he want this house to be seen from space!

So nice to visit...I remember those baby days...lots and lots and lots of work, but very, very precious times. Hang on; they go by too quickly. Your sil's home is lovely; I love the little reading nook.

I remember that photo of the buffet with all your Santas. I would love to see them on your mantle now and your tree. I do hope you will share photos of your Christmas decorating inside and out. I have promised myself to hold off but am becoming more tempted each day to start on my decorating. Having Victoria magazine doesn't help. It makes me long for my Victorian Christmas tree. That reminds me...I need to run to a garden center and pick up some new small white lights for my tree.
I loved the story of Lucas saying MOOOOOO. How cute! He was running circles around you and Tilly in the Baby Pumpkin video too. My mother says just watch out cause he is taking absolutely everything in.
Hugs ~
Heidi
I had a few good laughs at your stories! I am glad that you are getting more sleep and sorry that you cannot sleep in until 7 ,but I have to give you fair warning taht those sleep in days may be gone for a while!!!!I cannot wait to see your Christmas decorations!
"See you soon!
Hi Lizzie, thank for the wonderful update on you children! I always love hearing about them. Your Santas look lovely all together!!Enjoy your weekend sleep-in.lol Laurie
It's always a pleasure to visit & hear about the little ones, all 4 of them. Your christmas memory of the tacky decorations was fun, it sounds like you have a nice mom & dad.
Great santa collection too!
Hugs, DebraK
I just love reading your posts! You have the most adorable family! Do you remember I told you we each have three boys and one girl? Well, it must be something about being the only girl, as my daughter was also speaking in complete (4-5 word) sentences when she was a little over 12 months. You will have so much fun listening to your daughter, as they really come up with some funny things to say being so young!
And tacky Christmas lights! When I was little, I used to think our front yard resembled a circus at Christmastime we had so many colored lights (the big fat chunky glass ones)! When I married, I started doing all white lights, but decided more recently it looked too boring (just like you said) and now I'm back to circus-decorating! =) Happy Thanksgiving!
Lizzie if it makes you feel any better about Lucas (though it sounds like he is average and Tilly is just very advanced) Kaleb didn't say a word until he was well past age 3. I had him in speech therapy and had all sorts of assessments done on him. He just waited and talked when he was good and ready! Now he is almost 9. He has A's in every single subject and is that kid in the front of the class who asks for extra work. He reads books from the 4th-5th grade section of his school library (he is in 3rd). His average in math last semester was 100%!
I've enjoyed getting caught up on your blog! Your Christmas collection is lovely, and all of your children are just beautiful! I'm glad that everyone is doing well (and that y'all are catching up on your sleep! :) Your SIL's home is gorgeous, too.
Happy Thanksgiving~
Happy Thanksgiving, Lizzie! Hug all the babes for me. Hugs to you, too!
Lallee
i always love to hear about your beautiful babies..
love all the christmas things in the pic..
hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving.
Happy Thanksgiving!!! I love your photos too!xx
Hi Lizie! I had a couple of posts to catch up on. Your SIL house is amazing, (I could only dream). Lucas and Tilly are so darn cute in their Halloween costumes. You are such a good mom and don't worry about Lucas. Some children are just more talkative then others. You little twins are so adorable. They have the prettiest eyes and glad your getting a little more sleep, and it sounds like they are doing fine. Boy do I remember projectile vomiting! Funny enough, this was my child that kept tipping his glass well into his teens, lol. Hope you had a great THanksgiving.
Hi Lizzy, I loved your decorations. I agree with you that the outside lights are for the children sitting in the back seats watching the Christmas Lights. Our dad didn't do the flashlight nose trick, but he would load all seven of us children in the car with him and mama and take us around to see other's Christmas lights. We always liked the tackiest ones best too! The more the better!! For the last few years I spent a lot of time lighting the outside with lights, stringing them in trees and bushes. Our across the road neighbor and I did Griswald Christmas on the outside. But I decied this year, I'm too old to do that and no one else has volunteered to do it.... Even my neighbor hasn't done anything outside this year. He told me that the other neighbors would think the Grinch stole Christmas from us.
We both are decorating the insides this year...low key... mostly navity sets... All Jesus!!
